What is this “Big data”?

While “Big data” is a term popular enough in today’s environment of continuous digital transformation, surprisingly few understand its meaning beyond “something big” or “lots of data”. It is indeed the case in both emerging and developed markets that apart from those working in technology fields, few understand the specifics of big data. Given this scenario, even those working with just “data”, think they are working with “big data”. The formal definition of big data was given by the research agency Gartner in 2001, though the agency itself did not use the term “Big data”, in its discussion.

Big data was initially described in terms of the “three Vs” of Volume, Velocity, and Variety. Volume refers to the amount of data that can be collected from multiple sources. Working with big data involves dealing with zetabytes (not even Gigabytes) of data. Velocity refers to the speed at which data is generated. If big data collection is not happening in real-time, it is considered not fast enough. Variety refers to different types of data that can be collected. This is the biggest challenges of working with big data as it involves bringing together myriad structured, unstructured, and semi-structured data sources ranging from organized tables with fixed dimensions, to free-flowing social media text, to audio and video files. Over the years and with changing circumstances additional Vs of Veracity and Value have been included in the definition. Veracity involves ensuring that the data is accurate, is not inconsistent and can be trusted. Value often considered the most important V, involves identifying how one can extract strategically relevant insights from the data. While additional Vs continue to be added to the definition (the last we know is of 11 Vs), the above 5 Vs encompass a comprehensive view of the concept of Big data.

Among the very common applications of big data are in e-commerce, healthcare, and banking. E-commerce transactions run into millions per day, and involve purchases, returns, just browsing for information gathering, and textual, and video review posts by customers.

Being the Covid batch graduate, I barely got the chance to interact with my seniors/ juniors and this was the perfect meet-up to make up for it. Being my first Brunch pe churcha, I didn’t know what to expect but after meeting my Professors I knew I did the right thing. JAGSoM has always taught me to be a successful professional and has incorporated all the desired skills and competencies within me to face the world with utmost confidence.
